Apps are a commonplace phenomenon nowadays, and your phone may have numerous apps installed in it. As your smartphone may carry sensitive information, security is undoubtedly a factor to be concerned about. Today the world is driven by data, and its wrong use can create hazards and havoc. In this context, the apps that you install should not be allowed access to all the data on your smartphone. At the same time for the apps to function, they need access to information although not all, access to specific information or data is certainly required. As an example, the Google map would need access to the phone’s GPS status to know your location. Some may need access to your camera or the microphone, and yet others may need access to your contact list.
Permitting the app to access all the data may be hazardous, and so you need to view the permissions given to the particular apps as you are entitled with the power to view the permissions a particular app has and choose which permissions to give to the app for it to function and also protect your privacy. Most of the times when you install an app from the app store on a smartphone running on Android 6.0 or higher versions, you have the option of controlling the permissions or information that the app will have access to.
For instance, the app may ask access to your contact list or your camera which you have to allow for it to work. In other cases when an app requires any information, Android requires the app to ask for permission or check with you before they use certain information and elements. This is up to you, and you can take a call if you don’t want Facebook to access or know your location, you can choose the “deny” option when it asks for the permission to access the GPS data of your phone. These are the basics of the app permission which makes your phone much more secure. To keep your phone even more secure, you can always view the permissions given to the apps and manage them as well and disallow the information that you don’t want an app to access. Here is how to do it.
Manage and view the app permissions
There are two ways to view and manage the app permissions. The first one is to go to the Android’s main settings menu and choose the “Apps” option and subsequently select the app whose permission you like to view and manage. The following screen will list the app info in which you should choose the “permissions” option which will throw up the permissions your app can request for. They will have “on-off” switches which you need to toggle according to your preferences.
If you want to restrict the permissions of the apps in general and for instance, you want all the apps not to access your location, you can also do that. For this, again go to the Apps menu in the settings and tap the gear icon on the top of the screen. Then choose the “App permissions” option on the menu that follows. Select the permission that you want to manage and a list of the apps which are capable of asking specific permissions appear. Toggle the switches to “on” or “off” to deny or allow access to any particular app.
By using the above two methods, you can view and manage the App permissions to keep your phone secure. As data can create havoc if it goes into the wrong hands, your phone’s security is of utmost importance. It is not a safe practice to be unaware about these nitty-gritties of your phone, but as they say, prevention is better than cure, take care of the security options and keep your data and information safe and secure.
