3D Touch: The Evolving Smartphone Technology & How It Works?

Some of the latest innovations in the world of technology are most apparent on Smartphones. Every new season, an incredible feature is incorporated by a major brand in one of its flagship models. One such innovative feature is 3D Touch that was introduced by one of the leading Smartphone manufacturers in its latest duo models. The feature adds to the existing list of features like swiping, tapping, pinching or scrolling.

3D Touch is a new generation gesture that takes Force Touch technology to the next level. It is more sensitive than the latter and has capacitive sensors incorporated into the display of the device.

The novel feature adds a new dimension of ‘depth’ to the existing display commands. The primary aspect of this gesture is the amount of pressure being applied on the display. The Smartphone will identify the level of pressure and will respond accordingly.

There are two ways you can use the 3D Touch command. One is the hard press, known as Pop and the other is a softer one, called Peek.

On Smartphones, there are various regular functions for which we might have to open the app even if we wish to just see the preview. For instance, if we want to read new messages, we may be required to tap the messenger app and open it. However, using the Peek option, you can see the preview and would be able to read the message without having to launch the app. Again, once you’ve viewed the preview and wish to read the entire message by launching the app, you can use the Pop option. Furthermore, if you swipe the display while performing a Peek, a mode called “Quick Actions” will be activated. It will allow you to use the additional options of the item which you are previewing through Peek. This way you can add a touch of simplicity to the way you access information on your phone.

How is 3D touch useful?

  • While there would be new apps being created that would respond to the 3D Touch, there are already many functions that support this novel feature. Using the new gesture you can preview the emails in your inboxes without having to open them. You can forward them as well, without even opening.
  • Another interesting utility of the feature is that you can quickly create a new Instagram post, right from the home page. You can now do away with the traditional method of opening the app and checking the option before selecting the options. On the other hand, the feature lets you to directly swipe your finger to reach the options and perform the operations of your choice.
  • It also simplifies various other functions like messaging, calling, Snap selfies, Slow-mo or shooting videos. All can now be done right from the home page, even without the need to open the respective apps.

As per the predictions, it would not be too long before this novel feature would soon become a common one, even to an extent that it would turn into a necessity. More than anything else, the logical and natural implications of the feature deem it possible.
